Removing items from your impounded vehicle

If you need items from your vehicle while impounded Texas law requires that you must have:
A valid photo identification issued by a state or the federal government (usually a drivers license) plus any one of the 8 proofs of authority documents listed above. The person removing personal items will be required to provide a receipt of what was removed prior to leaving the premises. Note: The vehicle may not be dismantled and parts may not be removed (examples: engine, tires, installed radio or speakers).

Law Enforcement Holds

We cannot release vehicles or any items they contain if there is a Law Enforcement Hold on them. TDLR does not interfere with Law Enforcement Holds on vehicles. Nor does TDLR question the legitimacy of a Law Enforcement Hold. In the event that a Law Enforcement Hold in placed on a vehicle, the vehicle owner must work directly with the corresponding law enforcement agency to get the hold released before a vehicle or its contents can be released.
